Recovery Overview
Hour-by-Hour: Surgery Day
During the Procedure (15 minutes)
The actual laser treatment takes only seconds per eye. The entire procedure, including preparation, is about 15 minutes. You'll be awake but your eyes are numbed with drops. You may feel slight pressure but no pain.
First Hour After
You'll rest in a recovery area for 15-30 minutes while the surgeon checks your eyes. Vision will be blurry — like looking through a foggy window. Your eyes may feel:
- Gritty, like sand in your eyes
- Burning or stinging
- Very light-sensitive
- Watery or teary
This is completely normal. You'll receive eye drops and protective shields.
Hours 2-6: Go Home and Sleep
The best thing you can do is sleep. The numbing drops will wear off, and discomfort may increase. Sleeping helps you skip the most uncomfortable hours and promotes healing. Many surgeons provide a mild sedative or recommend over-the-counter sleep aids.
Evening of Surgery Day
When you wake up, your vision will likely be improved — still not perfect, but noticeably better than before surgery. Continue using drops as prescribed. Wear your protective shields while sleeping.
Day-by-Day Recovery
Day 1
First follow-up appointment. Surgeon checks flap position and healing. Most patients see 20/40 or better — enough to legally drive in most states.
Days 2-3
Vision continues improving. Light sensitivity decreases. Dry eye symptoms peak around day 2-3. Continue all drops religiously.
Days 4-7
Most patients feel very comfortable by day 4. Vision may fluctuate slightly throughout the day — this is normal. Continue drops.
Week 2
One-week follow-up appointment. Vision usually 20/25 or better. Dry eye symptoms beginning to improve.
Week 4
One-month follow-up. Most patients have stable 20/20 vision or better. Dry eye symptoms mostly resolved for most people.
Months 3-6
Final vision stabilization. Any night vision symptoms (glare, halos) typically resolve. Dry eye symptoms fully resolved for most patients.

Common Side Effects (and When They Resolve)
Dry Eyes
Almost everyone experiences some dry eye after LASIK. This is because the procedure temporarily disrupts corneal nerves that signal your eyes to produce tears.
- Peak: Days 2-7
- Improving: Weeks 2-4
- Resolved: 3-6 months for most patients
- Treatment: Frequent artificial tears, prescription drops if severe
Night Vision Issues (Glare/Halos)
Some patients see halos or glare around lights at night. This is usually temporary.
- Peak: First 1-2 weeks
- Improving: Weeks 4-8
- Resolved: 3-6 months for most patients
Vision Fluctuation
Your vision may be slightly better in the morning and slightly worse by evening, or vice versa. This is normal during healing.
- Common: First 1-2 weeks
- Resolved: Usually by 1 month
Light Sensitivity
Bright lights may feel uncomfortable for the first few days.
- Peak: Days 1-3
- Resolved: Usually within 1 week
- Management: Wear sunglasses
Post-Op Care Instructions
Essential Drop Schedule
- Antibiotic drops: 4x daily for 1 week (prevents infection)
- Steroid drops: 4x daily, tapering over 2-4 weeks (reduces inflammation)
- Artificial tears: Every 1-2 hours while awake, continuing as needed for months
Important DON'Ts

- ❌ Don't swim for 2-4 weeks
- ❌ Don't wear eye makeup for 1-2 weeks
- ❌ Don't skip drops — they're essential for healing
